It is now possible top take an Alaska cruise from San Francisco, rather than flying into Seattle, Vancouver, or Anchorage.

These are five reasons why you might want to consider starting your Alaskan cruise from the Bay Area rather than from ports further to the north.

1. The airfare can be much cheaper

Flying into San Francisco can be cheaper than flights into Vancouver, Anchorage, or even Seattle — especially if you live on the West Coast. In fact, many people in California can save even more by driving and avoiding airfare altogether.

2. You get three more days of cruising

Cruises out of San Francisco are generally ten days long, as opposed to the seven day cruises out of Seattle and Vancouver. There is simply so much to do on a modern cruise ship that you can never fit even a fraction of it into a week-long cruise. The extra three days extends your vacation, allowing you to enjoy even more of the ship’s facilities, activities, and entertainment.

3. You can add on some great side trips

There are simply dozens of great side trips to take from San Francisco, ranging from day trips to week-long excursions. You can choose from the towering redwoods, beautiful Napa Valley, picture-perfect Lake Tahoe, the coastline of Big Sur, Monterrey, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks, and the stunning Mendocino coastline – all within several hours of the San Francisco Bay Area. Slightly further afield (within a day’s drive) are Los Angeles, San Diego, the Grand Canyon, and the casinos and excitement of Las Vegas. In fact, San Francisco is easily accessible to the greatest variety of attractions of any of the Alaska cruise ports.

4. You can see more of the coastline

When sailing from San Francisco, you get to view far more of the amazing Pacific coastline, starting with the Golden Gate Bridge, the stunning Northern California Coast, and coastal Oregon and Washington.

5. You can explore San Francisco

Of course maybe the best part of taking an Alaskan cruise from San Francisco is that you can visit the city of San Francisco itself. One of the most beautiful cities in North America — or anywhere — San Francisco is built on steep hills, allowing you breathtaking views from seemingly every block. The city has wonderful restaurants, hotels, nightlife, museums, and cultural life. If you’ve never been, you’re in for a treat, and if you’ve visited before, you know just how special this city is. Of course, no trip to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the cable cars and a trip to Ghirardelli’s chocolates at Fisherman’s wharf. Throw in a tour of Alcatraz and an afternoon in Golden Gate Park, and you’re sure to have a fantastic time.

It’s never too early to start planning your next Spring or Summer family vacation. And, what better place to top your list than San Diego, California? San Diego has numerous family-friendly attractions to interest your family, including:

The San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is known the world over as a great zoo to visit. The 100-acre zoo houses almost 4000 animals, all of which have plenty of room to roam around. Your family will be able to visit gorillas, goats, lions, leopards, polar bears, bats, and, of course, the Tasmanian Devil. Now, when’s the last time your family saw a Tasmanian Devil? One of the most popular exhibits is the giant panda bears. Be sure to keep your camera ready for a shot of a panda sleeping in a tree.

Legoland

Though not located in San Diego, Legoland is just 30 minutes north of San Diego, which makes it a great day trip while you visit San Diego. Legoland is a theme park offering creations made of Legos, as well as rides your children will love. Be sure to visit Miniland USA, a reproduction of seven areas of the United States, constructed with 20 million LEGO bricks in 1:20 scale. Rides include Dragon Coaster, Volvo Driving School, Fun Town Fire Academy and the Coastersaurus. Most rides have height restrictions of 34″, 40″ or 42″, so make sure you pay attention to those restrictions before getting in line.

Balboa Park

Does your family enjoy museums? Then you must head over to Balboa Park, which is home to 15 major museums, as well as renowned performing arts venues, beautiful gardens, and the previously-mentioned San Diego Zoo. Museums include:

**Centro Cultural de la Raza: Dedicated to Mexican, Indigenous, Chicano, and Latino art and culture.

**Mingei International Museum: Dedicated to world folk art.

**Museum of Photographic Arts: Devoted entirely to the photographic arts, and housing more than 4,000 works, which represent the entire history of photography.

**Reuben H. Fleet Science Center: Includes 100 interactive science exhibits, in addition to Kid City”, where kids learn about the everyday world. You can also visit the world’s first and San Diego’s only IMAX(r) Theater.

**San Diego Air & Space Museum: Air & Space Museum is where you’ll learn about five centuries of aviation history.

**San Diego Automotive Museum: Devoted to, what else, the automobile.

**San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum: The nation’s largest multi-sport museum.

The great thing about San Diego, aside from the many family-friendly attractions, is the weather. They say that no matter what type of year it is, it’s never the wrong time to visit. With an annual high of 70 degrees and a low of 55 degrees, attractions stay open year-round. However, if you visit between December and March, you can catch some glimpses of the impressive gray whale. You can either go on a whale-watching cruise, or even just spot the whale from the coast.

A visit to San Diego also brings with it the opportunity to visit Mexico, as Tijuana, Mexico is only 23 miles to the south. Many people prefer to park at a parking lot on the U.S. side of the border, and walk across to Mexico, where you’ll find great restaurants and good shopping.

Of course, you could just decide to bring a chair and sit on one of San Diego’s beaches all day long and enjoy the ocean and beautiful sunsets. No matter what you want out of a vacation, San Diego will certainly not disappoint.

The beach community of La Jolla Shores is located just north of downtown. This is a magnificent beach on the Pacific Ocean with rocky cliffs to the south and Scripps Institute of Oceanography to the north. There are sea caves in the cliffs that can be entered by kayak during light swell conditions. There is a large marine preserve directly offshore.

Kayak from La Jolla Shores and see migrating whales at eye level during Hike Bike Kayak’s three-hour tour. A guide, life jackets, paddles and a kayak are provided. No kayaking experience is necessary. Warm drinks and snacks are provided after the paddle. Participants MUST be in good health, be able to swim, and be over 10 years old. Hike Bike Kayak cannot guarantee sightings due to the nature of wildlife.

San Diego Tours also lets you kayak out from La Jolla Shores to watch whales as they migrate between Alaska and the birthing grounds in Baja, Mexico. The whales’ migration path is such that they come close to La Jolla Shores. Paddles, kayaks, life jackets and doggy life jackets are all provided. This is an active tour, though no experience is required.

Kayaking in the famous La Jolla Sea Caves is an exciting adventure. However, the combination of ocean swells and rocks with a kayak is potentially dangerous in certain conditions, so be on your guard. To visit the caves by kayak, just show up at Aqua Adventures Kayaking Center, located at 2164 Avenida de la Playa. After a brief discussion of the surf zone and ocean conditions, you can launch and paddle to the sea caves.

OEX Dive & Kayak Centers offer kayak rentals from three locations, with La Jolla being the premiere kayak spot in San Diego. Your rental will launch from and return to La Jolla Shores at OEX’s shop located at the end of Avenida de la Playa. They offer sit-on-top kayaks, the most stable of all kayaks. They have a large fleet of single and double kayaks ready and waiting to go at your leisure.

Another kayaking company is All San Diego Tours, which also offers sightseeing tours, bay cruises, and whale watching, trips to Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Mexico and more. Allen’s Kayaks is another option open to anyone, whether you’re an expert paddler looking for specialist equipment or a complete beginner looking to try the sport. Some Hotels, such as the Catamaran Resort, offer kayaking as one of their water sport options.

For your safety, you should wear a wetsuit and life jacket and carry devices to signal for help. Taking a boating safety course is key to being safe, experts say, although you’re not required by law to take a course that teaches you how to kayak. Training courses can teach first-time kayakers how to maneuver the vessel in flat, calm waters such as lakes, and also in the ocean with its swells.

Adam O’Connor is the owner of San Diego Kayaking, which provides excellent free information on the La Jolla Sea Caves and what’s fun in La Jolla. Adam O’Connor is an expert in his industry and his website helps people find beautiful wedding halls in San Diego.
